The Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium (GSG) in Winterberg , formerly a private Catholic rectorate school in Winterberg in Westphalia , is a gymnasium and an elite sports school in North Rhine-Westphalia .

Naming

The school was called "Private Catholic Rectorate School in Winterberg in Westphalia" until it was renamed "Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium" in 1993 after the resistance fighters Sophie and Hans Scholl .

history

On April 24, 1919 , today's Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium was founded as a “Private Catholic Rector's School” with 21 male students. However, poor infrastructure and transport connections at that time repeatedly raised doubts about the usefulness of running the school. For decades there was particularly great opposition from the mayors of the city and Winterberg's city council ; they thought school was pointless and too expensive. Thanks to committed teachers and rectors, however, the school was difficult to maintain. From the school year 1936 on, girls were also allowed to attend school, and English began to be taught. In 1949, students took the secondary school leaving certificate for the first time . Pupils who wanted to get the Abitur had to switch to surrounding schools in Brilon or Fredeburg . In 1950 the city wanted to pursue its goal of leaving the school at a middle school again and was against the proposal to change the school structure to a grammar school. She eventually quit all teachers. The school could only be maintained with difficulty through the commitment of teachers, parents and the church. In 1965 the school became a high school with 318 students; two years later, students in Winterberg passed their Abitur for the first time. Since the newly created “Städtische Neusprachliche Gymnasium” was well attended, the current building was rebuilt in 1973.

In 1993 the grammar school was renamed Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium.

In 2005, the grammar school received the award of the Elite School of Sports , after the promotion of sports had been added as a focus in 1991 . In the mid-1990s the school became the “partner school for competitive sports” and in 2002 it became the “sports school of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia”. The Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium is thus one of 40 “elite schools of sport” in Germany and one of five in North Rhine-Westphalia .

Modern school sports hall

In 2014 the new and modern triple gym was opened. It was built next to the school building and contains, among other things, a running hose and a fitness room. It serves students and competitive athletes.

In 2019 the high school celebrated its 100th anniversary. On the occasion of this there was a spring market, a school festival organized by students and teachers and a traveling exhibition about the White Rose resistance group . Finally, on November 23, 2019, there was an open day and the annual Christmas market .
