Hammarstrand is a village ( Tatort ) in the Swedish province of Jämtlands län and the capital of the municipality of Ragunda . The settlement is located on Indalsälven about 100 km northwest of Sundsvall and 100 km east of Östersund .
history
The original Hammarstrand consisted of scattered farmhouses and a small center around the old church on the north side of the former Ragunda lake. The first church was built directly above the bank at the end of the 15th century.
The old stone church looks almost exactly the same today as it did when it was built. Parts of red granite, the so-called ragunda granite, are characteristic of the building. In the middle of the 19th century, a new church was built north of the old church.
The 1796 disaster
Large parts of Hammarstrand lie on the ground that used to be the bottom of Lake Ragunda. At the eastern end of the lake was the Storforsen or Gedungsen waterfall with a total drop of 35 meters. He posed a major obstacle to rafting as many trees were destroyed in the fall. In order to improve the transport of logs, a canal was dug through the gravel moraine south of the waterfall under the direction of the merchant Magnus Huss, known as Vildhussen . To make construction easier, the water of a stream was allowed to do most of the work. Those involved were not aware that the original river bed of the Indalsälven, which was buried during the last ice age , lay under the moraine . On the night of June 6th to 7th, 1796, so much water had collected in the Ragundasee that a tidal wave dug through the started canal and led the Indalsälven into its old bed. The entire 25 km long Ragundasee with 300 million cubic meters of water was emptied within 4 hours and the Gedungsen fell silent and became a " dead case ".
Hammarforsen
At the previous western end of the Ragunda lake, a new waterfall, Hammarforsen, now roared, and instead of the lake there was only a channel of the Indalsälven. The waterfall was able to develop freely for about 120 years until the construction of a hydroelectric power station began in the 1920s . The first turbine was put into operation in 1928.
Establishment of Hammarstrand as the central location
Even before the power plant, water mills were built below the Hammarforsen on the south bank of the river, and a settlement was growing nearby. At the beginning of 1900, the place received a post office called Hammarstrand. Little by little, shops, a pharmacy, doctors' offices and other important facilities moved from the old center around the church to the south side. When the communities Fors, Stugun and Ragunda were combined in 1974, Hammarstrand received central location status .
Culture and sights
Ragunda medicinal spring
In the middle of the 19th century, a spring was discovered in Hammarstrand, where the lake bed had previously been. The iron content of the water was considered healing. A park was created around the source for visitors from near and far. An estate became the Wildhussen Inn and Badehotel.
Bobsleigh and toboggan run
In the 1960s, Hammarstrand developed into a tourist destination. The slalom slope from the 1950s received the first chairlift in 1960. There were holiday homes and a campsite on Indalsälven. The most important decision was to build a toboggan run that met international standards. In the winter of 1963 the track was 700 meters long and a year later 1000 meters. After the international recognition, the Luge World Championships took place in Hammarstrand for the first time in 1967 . The place also hosted the 1975 and 1981 World Championships, as well as the 1970, 1976, 1978 and 1986 European Championships. In the 1990s, operations focused more on bobsleigh tours for tourists and the mild winters of the 2000s made the track almost exclusively a sight.
Ragundab
In the parish hall in the center of the village stands the stuffed so-called ragunda bear. It was shot in 1967 by the hunter Jan Modin in a nearby forest. At that time it was the largest brown bear shot in Scandinavia, weighing 325 kg.
Hammarstrand sign
On a mountain slope above Hammarstrand there is a lettering with the place name in the style of the Hollywood Sign . At 68 meters long and 8 meters high, it is about half the size of its model. The lettering was erected in 2007 as part of a television show.
