The NVA rest home "Auf dem Sonnenberg" was a building that shaped the townscape in the Thuringian town of Frauenwald in the Ilm district , which served as an accommodation facility for professional officers, NCOs and ensigns of the National People's Army (NVA) as well as officers from the Warsaw Pact armies . In addition, conditioning courses for pilots were held here. The former community of Frauenwald had the building, which had since become a ruin, demolished in 2017.

location

The building stood at the end of the village of Frauenwald, which was trained as a street village. It was located on the highest point of the community, the so-called Großer Riesenhaupt (764 m), a summit of the Kalten Staudenkopf .

Building description

The property was an eight-storey prefabricated building with 60.00 cubic meters of enclosed space, the southern side of which was sloping and thus resembled a terrace house - hence the popular nickname “ski jump house”. The house was structured around a longitudinal axis with a central staircase and technology shaft and faced north-south. On the sloping south side, which was open to the sun, there were balconies on the top five floors. In the living area, the facade was horizontally structured and marked by rows of windows that were interrupted by red areas. There were around 400 beds in the house. There was a terrace on the roof . The vertical, articulated technical and staircase shaft was clad in the east with decorative elements in the form of large panels. The entrance area to the north contained the dining room. In the basement there was a spacious lobby with a wood-paneled reception desk . The entrance area was designed on the small side, the associated vestibule implemented with glass blocks . In front of the house there was a concrete area for parking vehicles. Here, arriving buses could also load and unload their passengers in a turning loop. To the west there was a sports area with a basketball facility and large lawns, to the north of the building there were additional supply houses and two spacious accommodation houses for the employees. The whole area was secured by a fence, there were guard houses in the entrance area.

During the guided tours in the nearby bunker museum , a security cable for communication with the SED district management in Suhl is reported. The command bunker was built at the same time as the rest home, and building materials for it were declared as camouflage material for the NVA home. An outside antenna connected to the bunker was on the roof of the NVA home.

history

The NVA was looking for a piece of land in the remote areas of the Thuringian Forest for a rest home, which was finally built in Frauenwald and opened in 1976. In the following period the building was used by professional soldiers of the NVA and friendly armies. From 1977 to 1990 the former luge athlete Wolfgang Scheidel was a sports instructor there. After the fall of the Wall , the Bundeswehr took over the complex as the legal successor, but soon gave it up again for economic reasons. After various temporary uses, the building served as a home for asylum seekers in the 1990s . It then fell into disrepair and was increasingly destroyed by vandalism . In 2014 the community of Frauenwald bought the property to have it demolished. The demolition was financed by the company 50Hertz Transmission as part of a compensation measure for the construction of a 380 kV power line, the so-called Thuringian Electricity Bridge , through the Thuringian Forest. In 2016, the chemical hydrazine hydrate , which was used for the emergency power generators, was found in the basement during a large-scale operation by the fire services. They were disposed of. The 1.4 million euro demolition took place in winter 2017/18. After the building had been gutted, the outer walls were torn down. The concrete was crushed on site and used for road construction. 24,000 tons of demolition material are removed.
