Paul Aste

Paul Aste (born December 5, 1916 ) is a former Austrian luge and bobsleigh athlete .

Career

Paul Aste was one of the most successful luge riders after the Second World War . He won the first post-war European championship in 1951 in Igls in front of his compatriots Willi Lache and Hermann Mayregger . In 1952 he had to be content with the silver medal behind Rudolf Maschke . A second and a third time he was European champion in 1953 and 1955. In 1952 he won the European championship in a two-seater together with Heinrich Isser , and a year later silver behind Hans Krausner / Wilhelm Lache. In 1955 he was again European champion with Heinrich Isser.

In 1955 Aste was also able to win a world championship medal in bobsleigh, in the two-man bobsleigh with Josef Isser he achieved second place. In 1958 he again made it onto the podium with Heinrich Isser, this time placing third, also in the two-man bobsleigh.

At the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, he pronounced the Olympic oath during the opening ceremony on January 29th. In the same year he received the Golden Merit of the Republic of Austria .
