Jaromír Weinberger
Jaromír Weinberger (born January 8, 1896 in Prague , Austria-Hungary ; died August 8, 1967 in Saint Petersburg , Florida , United States ) was a Czech composer of Jewish descent.
Life
Weinberger studied at the Prague Conservatory with Jaroslav Křička and Karel Hoffmeister . At the age of 20 he moved to Leipzig to attend the Conservatory there in Max Reger's composition class . With his opera Švanda dudák (German title: Schwanda, the bagpiper ) , which premiered in Prague in 1927 , he quickly became very well known. His most successful work saw numerous performances worldwide in the next few years, up to 1931 there were more than 2000. Since 1929 he has lived in Baden near Vienna and in Modřany near Prague, he had to emigrate as a Jew in autumn 1938 and was able to enter the USA via France in 1939. In 1948 he received American citizenship . After the Second World War he only returned to Europe for summer stays. He died in 1967 at his home in Saint Petersburg in Florida by suicide .
