Karel Hoffmeister (born September 26, 1868 in Liblice , † September 23, 1952 in Hluboká nad Vltavou ) was a Czech pianist, piano teacher and musicologist.

Hoffmeister completed a music degree in Prague and was an organ student of Karel Knittl , Josef Klička and Karel Stecker , then a piano student of Jindřich Kàan z Albestu . This was followed by a study of history, art history and aesthetics at Charles University in Prague with Otakar Hostinský . After 1891 he taught at the music school in Ljubljana and after 1898 at the Prague Conservatory , after 1902 as a professor of music theory and music history. From 1920 to 1939 head of a master class at the state conservatory, repeated its rector, at the same time piano virtuoso and music writer.

From 1923 he was rector of the conservatory in Prague with interruptions . In 1926 he introduced harpsichord lessons there. His students included u. a. František Rauch , Josef Páleníček , Otakar Vondrovic , Miroslav Klega , Vilém Petrželka , Ernst Roth , Jindřich Jindřich , Oskar Morawetz and Oldrich Kredba .

From 1907 to 1918 Hoffmeister was co-editor of the Hudební revue ( Musical Revue ) with Karel Stecker . As a musicologist he emerged with monographs on Antonín Dvořák , Bedřich Smetana , Johann Sebastian Bach and dealt with the works of Leoš Janáček and Josef Suk .
