Josef Páleníček

Josef Páleníček (born July 19, 1914 in Travnik , Bosnia , † March 7, 1991 in Prague ) was a Czech pianist and composer.

Life

At the age of 12 he appeared as a soloist. As a student of Karel Hoffmeister , he attended the Prague Conservatory and the Mistrovská Skola in Prague. At the same time he also studied law in Prague. In 1935 he founded the Smetana Trio . Between 1936 and 1938 he moved to Paris, where he took piano lessons from Alfred Cortot and chamber music from Pierre Fournier . In 1939 he returned to Czechoslovakia as a professor at the higher music conservatory in Prague.

Until 1978 he was in charge of the Smetana Trio, which has since been renamed the Czech Trio . In addition to Czech composers such as Leoš Janáček and Bohuslav Martinů , whom he met personally during his time in Paris, the focus of his repertoire was on the works of Beethoven and Schubert . Among the numerous recordings, the ones with the conductor Karel Ančerl are worth mentioning. His grave is in the Žeranovice cemetery .
