Oval lingotto
The Oval Lingotto is a sports and events hall in the Italian city of Turin . It is located in the south-east of the city between the Lingotto exhibition center and Lingotto train station, near the Olympic Village and the Torino Palavela hall .
The hall served as the venue for the speed skating competitions during the 2006 Winter Olympics . It has an area of 26,500 m² and a capacity of 8,500 spectators.
The construction of the hall, which works as a self-supporting structure without any pillars, began in 2002 and lasted until November 2005. First, buildings owned by the Italian state railways FS had to be demolished . The necessary components were manufactured in Pordenone and then assembled in Turin. The construction costs amounted to around 70 million euros .
After the Olympic Games, the oval served as a trade fair and event hall. Among other things, the 2006 Chess Olympiad , the 2006 World Fencing Championships and the 2009 European Athletics Indoor Championships took place in the hall. Mobile partition walls enable the hall to be divided into three units.
Awards
In 2007, the Oval Lingotto received the IOC / IAKS Award in gold, the only international architecture award for sports and leisure facilities that have already proven themselves in operation (new buildings, extensions or modernizations).
