The Vikingskipet ( German Viking ship ), one of the largest speed skating rinks in the world, is located in the Norwegian city of Hamar , Innlandet province , and was built for the 1994 Olympic Games in Lillehammer . It was completed in 1992 and the following year it passed the dress rehearsal with the men's speed skating all- around championship . It got its name from the form of an overturned Viking ship proposed by the architects Biong & Biong and Niels Torp. The self-supporting roof construction, without supporting pillars in the inner field, offers an unrestricted view of what is happening and enables versatile use of the interior. In addition to international speed skating championships, events in the disciplines of soccer, track cycling , track and field, curling , motor sports and cross-country skiing are held in the multi-purpose hall , as well as exhibitions and trade fairs.
Technical specifications
On a floor area of 22,000 m², the hall offers 26,000 m² for events. The building is 250 m long, 110 m wide and reaches a height of 36 m. The 25,000 m² roof rests on 17 glulam beams , the longest of which is 96 m. These beams are up to 4 m high. Except for the two curves, the entire bottom of the inner surface can be cooled. This enables the simultaneous use of two ice hockey rinks or one bandy rink.
Up to 10,600 people can be seated in the stands. Overall, the hall is approved for up to 20,000 people (with additional seating and standing room).
