The Stegny Gate ( Bahn Stegny ) is a speed skating rink in the Mokotów district of Warsaw in Poland .

history

In 1953 the ice rink in the Stegny district was built as a natural ice rink . In 1977, after more than 20 years, operations were stopped. As a result, work began on the new ice rink with an artificial cooling system. In 1979 the 400 meter artificial ice rink was reopened.

In addition to international matches, the first women’s World Cup 1991/92 took place in December 1991 . The Austrian Emese Hunyady won over 1500 and 3000 meters with a course record. The US- American Bonnie Blair won the 500 and 1000 meters, also with a course record . In 1997 the single distance world championships took place here. With three titles, the German Gunda Niemann was the most successful athlete with titles over 1500, 3000 and 5000 meters. The Dutchman Rintje Ritsma was the most successful athlete with two titles over 1500 and 5000 meters. He had to leave the title over 10,000 meters to his compatriot Gianni Romme . In the 1999/2000 season , the Speed Skating World Cup made a stop in Poland for the second time. Marianne Timmer ( NLD ) and Michael Künzel ( DEU ) won the 1000 meters . Both with course records that still exist today.

The WTŁ Stegny association based on the railway produced the internationally successful Polish speed skater Katarzyna Woźniak . She is also the holder of three track records on the Tor Stegny which she had won at Polish championships, among others.
