Michael Künzel (born May 24, 1973 in Plauen ) is a former German speed skater on the sprint routes.

Michael Künzel started at Sportclub Berlin in 1990 , switched to EC Berlin in 1995, to the Berlin Ice Skating Club from 1893 in 1997 and to EHC Eisbären Berlin in 1999 . The last coach was Joachim Franke .

Between 1996 and 2003 Künzel took part in six single distance world championships. The best result was a seventh place in 2000 in Nagano over 500 meters. He also achieved the same placement in Seoul in 2000 at the Sprint World Championships , where he also competed six times between 1996 and 2001. The highlights of his career were participating in the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano and 2002 in Salt Lake City . In 1998 he was 11th over 500 meters, 19th in 2002 and 24th over 1000 meters. He made his debut in the World Cup in January 1998 in Innsbruck and was 18th over 1000 meters. A month later, he was eighth over 500 meters in the top ten for the first time in Inzell . In 1998 he ran over 500 meters in Chuncheon as third place behind Jeremy Wotherspoon and Michael Ireland for the first time on the podium. In 1999 he won his only world cup race over 1000 meters in Warsaw .

In 1996, 1999, 2000 and 2001 Künzel won the German championship titles over 500 meters, 2000 and 2003 over 1000 meters and in 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2001 in the sprint all-around competition.
