Maxim Andrejewitsch Schabalin ( Russian Максим Андреевич Шабалин , born January 25, 1982 in Kuibyshev ) is a former Russian figure skater who started in ice dancing .

Life

Maxim Schabalin's parents are Olga Wassiljewna and Andrej Wladimirowitsch Schabalin . He has a younger sister named Olesja Andrejewna Schabalina .

Shabalin started figure skating at the age of five. At the age of fifteen he left the Soviet Union to train with Margarita Totewa in Bulgaria . The couple also started for Bulgaria. However, he returned to Russia in 1999 to start with Jelena Chaliawina (for Russia). Schabalin / Chaliawina finished third at the 2001 World Figure Skating Championships and a year later second. They trained with Oleg Sudakov .

In spring 2002 he did a trial training with Oxana Domnina . This trial training became more and the couple started together from then on. In their first season together, they became junior world champions and also won all other competitions in which they participated. They were also able to qualify for the World and European Championships through their third place at the Russian championships.

In 2005 they became Russian ice dancing champions for the first time in the absence of the reigning world and European champions Tatjana Nawka and Roman Kostomarow . They were also able to improve steadily in international competitions. The following year they were second again at the Russian championships behind Nawka / Kostomarow. At the Olympic Games in Turin, they finished eighth.

In 2007 Domnina / Schabalin won a medal at the European Championships for the first time when they finished second behind Isabelle Delobel and Olivier Schoenfelder . That year they became Russian champions again. In the same season, they were also able to achieve first place in a Grand Prix ( Cup of China ) for the first time .

In the 2007/08 season they won both the Cup of Russia and the Grand Prix final . However, they could not take part in the Russian championships due to an injury to Schabalin, but were nevertheless provided by the Russian Federation for the European and World Championships as participants. At the European Championships, Domnina and Schabalin took second place after both the compulsory dance and the original dance. With an outstanding freestyle, however, they were able to catch the French Delobel / Schoenfelder who were lying in front of them and became European champions for the first time in their career. The couple had to cancel the subsequent World Championships due to the resurgence of Shabalin's injury.

Domnina / Schabalin start for the Ice Skating School Odinzowo . The couple trained for a long time with Alexei Gorshkov in Domnina's hometown of Odintsovo, Moscow Oblast . But changed her coach after the 2007/08 season and now train with the former Olympic champions Natalja Linitschuk and Gennady Karponosov in the USA .

In the 2008/09 season Domnina / Schabalin won the Cup of China and finished second in the Cup of Russia . At the Grand Prix Final they came second behind Delobel / Schoenfelder. The couple had to cancel the Russian championships again. After Maxim Shabalin's fall in the compulsory dance of the European Championships, the couple ended the competition due to another injury to Shabalin's knee. At the subsequent world championships, they won the gold medal.

In the following year Domnina / Schabalin won again the European Championship before they could win the bronze medal at the Olympic Games in Vancouver . After this success they resigned from amateur sports.

In November 2010, Shabalin married the Russian actress Irina Grineva .
