Courtney John Lyndhurst Jones (born April 30, 1933 ) is a retired British figure skater who started in ice dancing .

Life

Initially, he competed alongside June Markham . In 1956, the couple won the silver medal behind their compatriots Pamela Weight and Paul Thomas when they made their world championship and European championship debut . In 1957, as reigning British champions, they became European champions in Vienna and world champions in Colorado Springs . They defended their titles in 1958 at the European Championships in Bratislava and the World Championships in Paris .

From 1959 Doreen Denny Jones' new ice dance partner. With her he was able to seamlessly build on his past successes. The couple won all of the competitions they entered. In 1959, as reigning British champions, they became European champions in Davos and world champions in Colorado Springs . They defended their titles in 1960 at the European Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the World Championships in Vancouver . In 1961 they became European champions again in Berlin . It was their last competition as the 1961 World Cup in Prague was canceled due to the US team's plane crash .

Courtney Jones and his two ice dance partners achieved a total of four world championship titles and five European championship titles. Only Alexander Gorschkow was more successful than him with six World Cup titles and six European Championship titles.

Jones was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1980 for his services in ice dancing . He is a member of the governing body of the International Skating Union and was also President of the British Skating Federation. He acted as a judge and worked as a costume designer. He advised Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean and was involved in their famous Bolero freestyle. In 1986 he was inducted into the Figure Skating Hall of Fame .
