Gennadi Michailowitsch Karponossow ( Russian Геннадий Михайлович Карпоносов ; born November 21, 1950 in Moscow ) is a former Russian figure skater who started in ice dancing for the Soviet Union .

Career

Gennady Karponosov initially competed with Jelena Scharkowa . You were one of Tatiana Tarasova's first pupils . Their best placings were eighth place at world championships , which they achieved from 1970 to 1972 , and sixth place at European championships , which they occupied from 1970 to 1972 .

Karponosov celebrated his greatest successes as a partner of Natalja Linitschuk . They were trained by Jelena Tchaikovskaya . In the period from 1974 to 1981 they took part in all European championships and always reached the podium. In 1979 in Zagreb and 1980 in Göteborg they became European champions, 1978 vice European champions and in 1974 , 1975 , 1976 , 1977 and 1981 they won the bronze medal. At world championships she attended from 1974 to 1980. In 1978 in Ottawa and 1979 in Vienna they became world champions. In 1980 they won silver and in 1974 and 1977 bronze. Linichuk and Karponosov played two Olympic Games . In 1976 in Innsbruck , at the first Olympic Games with ice dancing in the program, they took fourth place and in 1980 in Lake Placid they became Olympic champions , becoming the Olympic successors of their country folk Lyudmila Pachomowa and Alexander Gorshkov .

In 1981 Natalja Linitschuk and Gennady Karponosov ended their careers as active figure skaters. They married on July 31, 1981. Karponosov studied at the State Institute for International Relations in Moscow.

The couple initially lived on in Moscow. Karponosov and Linichuk together became successful ice dance coaches. They later went to the USA , first to Delaware and then to Pennsylvania . They trained among others Oxana Grishchuk / Evgeni Platow , Anselika Krylowa / Oleg Ovsjannikow , Irina Lobatschowa / Ilja Awerbuch , Oxana Domnina / Maxim Schabalin (all Russia ), Galit Chait / Sergei Sachnowski and Natalja Gudina / Alexei Beletski (all Israel ), Albena Denkowa / Maxim Stawiski ( Bulgaria ) and the Americans Tanith Belbin / Benjamin Agosto .

In 2001, Karponosov was inducted into the Jewish Hall of Fame of Sports.
