The 2020 World Figure Skating Championships should take place from March 16-22, 2020 in the Canadian metropolis of Montreal . This was announced by the Council of the International Skating Union (ISU) in June 2017. After the 1932 World Cup, Montreal would have hosted the World Figure Skating Championships for the second time. The venue should be the Center Bell .
On March 11, 2020, the government decided the province of Quebec the cancellation of the tournament because of the coronavirus - pandemic . Health Secretary Danielle McCann cited the risk of transmission as the reason. The last time the World Figure Skating Championships were canceled was in 1961 when the plane carrying the US team crashed on the way to Prague . A total of 73 people died at the time. Maybe the championships can be rescheduled, but in no case will this happen before October 2020.
On April 16, 2020, the World Championships were finally canceled by the ISU.
