The 2nd World Figure Skating Championship took place on February 13 and 14, 1897 in Stockholm ( Sweden ).
The Austrian Gustav Hügel won the competition ahead of Ulrich Salchow despite a tendon strain that he sustained during training in Hamburg , and although all the judges came from Sweden. He became the first Austrian world champion and thus established a long tradition of success that lasted until the 1960s.
