The 53rd World Figure Skating Championships took place from February 28 to March 3, 1963 in Cortina d'Ampezzo , Italy .
Only one title went overseas. The relatively poor performance of the USA was due to the crash of Sabena Flight 548 near Brussels on February 15, 1961, in which the entire US figure skating elite who were on board the Boeing 707 on the way to the World Cup in Prague, died came.

The last compulsory figures were run on March 1st. The freestyle took place on the same evening, although the already late start at 9:30 p.m. was delayed and lasted until dawn. In addition, it was extremely cold, so that the question was asked whether world champion McPherson was "best free skier" or "best cold-resistant participant". It also found that McPherson had been overrated. After the duty, Schnelldorfer was ahead of Divin, Calmat and McPherson.
