Maya Berović (born as Maja Berović, born July 8, 1987 in Malešići near Ilijaš , SR Bosnia and Herzegovina , Yugoslavia ), known by her stage name Maya , is a Bosnian popfolk singer. Her career began at the age of 19 when she signed a contract with Grand Produkcija. She is one of the most important pop singers in the region with five albums and several singles. It is particularly well known in Bosnia and Herzegovina , Serbia and Croatia .

Childhood and youth

Berović was born in the village of Malešići in the municipality of Ilijaš near Sarajevo in what is now Bosnia and Herzegovina to a Bosnian-Serbian couple. Her family lived in Malešići until the end of the Bosnian War in 1995 when her mother, older brother and Maya herself moved to Bratunac , where her mother originally comes from. Maya went to school in Bratunac, where she made her first experiences with music. She started singing in local discos on weekends at age 12 until she turned 18. In her youth she heard singers like Dragana Mirković , Lepa Brena and Ceca , which shows a certain influence on her own music.

Career

2007-08: Život uživo, Crno zlato

When Maya signed with the Serbian production studio Grand Produkcija , her first album "Život uživo" (Live Live) was released in August 2007. The songs were written by famous Serbian songwriters such as Marina Tucaković and Aleksandar Milić. She had easy success with the song "Džin i limunada" (Gin and Lemonade). Shortly afterwards she left her sales department because she had different ideas about her future than the director Saša Popović. Maya switched to City Records, where she released her second album Crno Zlato (black gold) on the short-lived IN Music label in December 2008. Crno Zlato was recorded in a studio in Zemun. Ivana Selakov, a then unknown singer, was featured as a backup vowel on various songs. "Sedativ", "Uspomene" (memories) and the title song got more radio airtime than gin and lemonade.

2009–11: BN Music and Maya

Two months after the release of Crno Zlato, a self-released single "Koliko te ludo volim ja" (How much I love you) made its debut in February 2009. Shortly afterwards, she began work on her third album on the BN Music label , which in Bijeljina is sedentary.

Her big breakthrough came with her third album "Maya" and the success of the ballad "Djevojacko prezime" (maiden name) in February 2011. The song won the "Hit of the Year" award in Sarajevo in 2011 . The rest of the album was composed mainly of pop-folk songs which have received good reviews from their audiences.

2012–13: City Records and Djevojka sa juga

Maya began work on her next album after a month-long trip from January to February 2012. She signed a contract with City Records recording studio . The first single on the album was "Leti ptico slobodno" (Fly calmly, little bird), written by Dragiša Baša and produced by Dejan Abadić. The premiere was on June 25, 2012.

Her fourth album Djevokjka sa juga (The Girl from the South) was released on October 17th in Bosnia & Herzegovina and Serbia, and on October 20th in neighboring countries. She said she was "extremely happy" with her new label and the support. Djevojka sa juga was the first time she worked with Damir Handanović, a composer who made several hits for singers such as Ceca, Dara Bubamara, Elvira Rahić, Darko Lazić and Mile Kitić. The photo shoot for the album lasted 18 hours and had to be paused because Maya became sick from hunger.

During the release of Djevojka sa Juga and comments from the public and the press about her music and how her style differs from the majority-stimulating colleagues, she said:

“I entered the world of show business with the intention of proving myself with the quality of my songs. I think that's the only way to build a successful career. "
