The Vesterålen is a ship owned by the shipping company Hurtigruten ASA and operates regular services on the Hurtigruten on the coast of Norway . The name of the ship refers to a group of islands about 300 km north of the Arctic Circle off the coast of Norway. She is now the third ship in the Hurtigrute that bears this name. The first Vesteraalen from 1892 was the first Hurtigruten ship to leave the port of Trondheim for Hammerfest on July 2, 1893 .

history

Construction, commissioning and use

The ship, built at Kaarbø's Mekaniske Verkstad in Harstad , was launched on September 18, 1982, was christened on February 10, 1983 and shortly afterwards put into service for the then Vesteraalens Dampskibsselskab A / S, Stokmarknes . In 2006 Vesterålen was taken over by the shipping company Hurtigruten ASA .

Remodeling

Extensive renovations, which significantly shaped the character and silhouette of the ship, took place in 1988 and 1995. In 1988, the entire stern area at the Bremerhaven engine plant , which was originally intended for the transport of containers , was given a new structure. Additional cabin capacities were created there, as well as a saloon and a viewing deck. In 1995, a panorama salon was set up amidships at Haugesund Mekaniske Verksted , which offers passengers a good all-round view.

Machine system and drive

The two drive systems of Vesterålen each consist of a 16-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine of the type BMV Bergen Diesel KVM-16, which acts on a variable pitch propeller via a reduction gear (Ulstein 600 AGSC) and a shaft system . The ship has three main generators. Two ( port and starboard generators) are driven by diesel engines of the type BMV Bergen Diesel KRG-5, another by a diesel engine of the type BMV Bergen Diesel KRG-3. An emergency diesel generator is also available.

In order to improve maneuverability at low speeds, the Vesterålen is equipped with a Brunvoll transverse thruster in the bow and stern.

Furnishing

The Vesterålen has since last remodeling space for 550 passengers. She has 300 beds in 147 cabins; all cabins are equipped with shower and toilet. The 35 parking spaces for cars can be reached via a loading ramp on the port side . The ship's equipment includes various salons, a restaurant and café, a shop and two conference rooms.

Sister ships

Almost identical sister ships were the Narvik and Lyngen . Like the Vesterålen, these units were rebuilt several times and received similar stern superstructures and also a panorama salon amidships. These ships have since left the line service on the Hurtigrute and have been sold to other shipping companies.
