Foundation and development

In 1923 Merlin Gerin equipped the first electrified Paris-Orléans railway line. The company expanded steadily and in 1950 had a workforce of 3,450. Subsidiaries were established outside of France. In the years that followed, the company turned to the emerging electronics market and produced the first low-voltage circuit breaker in the Compact series under a Westinghouse license. Later the first electronic insulation monitoring device Vigilohm and automatic switchgear of the DA series were produced at low voltage level. In 1969 the company consisted of 8,000 employees in 74 agencies with 17 licensees.

From 1975 Schneider began gradually to participate in the capital of Merlin Gerin, of which it acquired 100% of the shares in 1992. In 1994 Merlin Gerin was transferred to the Schneider Group together with Telemecanique and Square D. The name was retained until 2008; thereafter the company activities were fully integrated into Schneider Electric.
