Founded in 1902, McBride Manufacturing is renamed Square D in 1917 due to the brand recognition, a D in the square on products . In 1991 Groupe Schneider took over the company.

At Schneider Electric , the Square D brand stands for electrical power distribution and control technology based on North American standards and customs. It has also been recognized in industry and infrastructure for a very long time, making it an important supplier of products and systems for industrial automation and control throughout North America. It is also represented in Asia, especially in Thailand.

Foundation and development

Bryson D. Horton and James B. McCarthy founded the company in Detroit in 1902 under the name McBride Manufacturing . However, in 1908 the name was changed to Detroit Fuse and Manufacturing . The products marked with a D in a square, the company logo, became more and more popular, so that in 1917 the company name was changed to Square D. Initially, low-voltage switchgear was manufactured, later Square D also entered industrial control technology and the manufacture of circuit breakers under Westinghouse license. In 1935 the first own range of circuit breakers was presented.

Square D expanded very successfully, including to Peru , Los Angeles and Houston . In 1948 it employed 7,000 people and operated ten plants in North America. The company also produced half of the circuit breakers used in aircraft construction. In the following years, among other things, the first low-voltage switchgear with withdrawable technology and the first type S motor outlet were presented. In 1976 Square D developed the first programmable logic controller with a microprocessor.

In 1990 the company employed 18,500 people and had sales of 1.65 billion US $ with offices in 23 countries.

In 1991, Square D was taken over by Groupe Schneider and integrated in 1994. The name Square D has been used as a core brand by Schneider Electric since 1999 .
