The UND Adriyatik was a Turkish RoRo ship that caught fire in February 2008 in the Adriatic Sea off the coast of Croatia .

history

The ship was built under the construction number 714 at the Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft and delivered to the Turkish shipping company UND Ro-Ro in Istanbul on September 21, 2001 .

fire

The ship caught fire on February 6, 2008 while sailing from Pendik ( Istanbul ) to Trieste in Croatian territorial waters . On board the 193 m long ship were around 200 trucks and 9 t of hazardous goods (including 2 t of matches and 6 t of lubricants) as well as around 1,000 t of marine fuel, which could pose a risk to the environment.

Approximate location of the UND Adriyatics at the time the fire broke out on February 6 and the day after it was driven off.

The Croatian Ministry of Transport reported that the ship had caught fire in the Adriatic 13  nautical miles west of the city of Rovinj in the early morning hours of February 6, 2008, just outside the newly established Croatian marine protection zone. An emergency call was made at 04:04 a.m. local time. A spokesman said that Croatian fire-fighting planes and boats tried to put out the fire, but the ship could not be saved. Since the fire had broken out inside the ship, extinguishing it from the outside would be very difficult.

The 22 crew members and nine passengers who were on board the ship were rescued by the Greek ferry Ikarus Palace , which was en route to Venice . Four of the crew members had burns suffered first and second degree burns.

It was feared that the ship would sink or that currents could drive the ship onto the Croatian coast. A fire department spokesman said two tugs would sprinkle the ship with water throughout the night to lower the temperature. Oil barriers were placed around the ship , but no oil leaked.

On the morning of February 7th, the still burning ship was lying about 8 km south-west of the island of Brijuni , a national park. According to Croatian information, the fire was under control and there was no longer any danger to the environment. Dutch specialists in fire fighting at sea ( Smit Internationale ) arrived but were not yet able to board. The firefighters who u. a. known for their role in the rescue operation of the Russian nuclear submarine K-141 Kursk , had been commissioned by the ship's owner.

The ship was first towed to Trieste. After plans for rebuilding failed, the ship was towed to Aliaga / Turkey for scrapping in the summer of 2010.
