Ernst Leberecht Hugo Georg Colmar von Stubenrauch (born July 19, 1853 in Sagan ; † September 4, 1909 in Schierke ) was a German lawyer, local politician and district administrator in the Teltow district south of Berlin . Stubenrauch is considered the "father of the Teltow Canal ".

Life

Stubenrauch grew up in Berlin , where he attended the Friedrichswerder high school. On his 18th birthday, he volunteered in the Guard Fusilier Regiment in Berlin and went to the Franco-German War in 1870/1871. He then studied law at the Universities of Giessen and Berlin and joined the Corps Teutonia Giessen . After his exams he became assistant judge in Berlin in 1879, government assessor in Potsdam from 1880 to 1885 , and administrator of the Potsdam Police Directorate in 1883 . On April 1, 1885, he became acting the District Office and then the same year on August 18, the final appointment by Emperor of Teltow, I. Wilhelm obtain.

The picture shows the monument on the market square in Teltow, which was created by the sculptor Ferdinand Lepcke and which was ceremoniously unveiled on October 25, 1908. Today the work is missing the two side parts, bronze reliefs with female sculptures, which were supposed to symbolize the sister
rivers Havel and Spree connected by the Teltow Canal

In 1891 he got into a violent conflict with influential forces at the imperial court because of a resident-friendly and unfavorable building code for property developers, as he disrupted their business. Stubenrauch was declared relieved of his office, the building regulations were declared ineffective after four days by the mayor - and Stubenrauch was confirmed by the district council in January 1892, and the building regulations were reinstated. It had strictly regulated the building heights and the density of buildings . To this day, for example, it can still be seen in the cityscape on the Ringbahntrasse at the transition between the Berlin districts of Wilmersdorf (inner city area) and Friedenau (former district): In contrast to the four-story buildings in Wilmersdorf, the houses in Friedenau only have three upper floors. A street named after Stubenrauch is in the immediate vicinity.

During Stubenrauch's term of office, the infrastructure of the Teltow district in particular was greatly expanded. The most important measure worth mentioning is the 38-kilometer-long Teltow Canal , which connects the Havel near Potsdam with the Dahme near Grünau in today's Berlin district of Treptow-Köpenick . It was built on Stubenrauch's initiative between 1900 and 1906. In addition, the district's road network grew by 286 kilometers during his tenure and new hospitals were built in Zossen , Trebbin , Lichterfelde and Mittenwalde .

The construction of the Grunewald Tower , a monument that was to remind future generations of the merits of the Hohenzollern family , also goes back to him. Stubenrauch was raised to hereditary nobility on January 1, 1900 by Kaiser Wilhelm II . In 1908 he became police chief in Berlin. A year later, the popular politician died of throat cancer . Ernst von Stubenrauch was buried in the cemetery of the community of Genshagen in today's Teltow-Fläming district .

Honors

On the occasion of the formation of Greater Berlin in 1920, several communities in the Teltow district came to Berlin. Each of them had its own Stubenrauchstrasse , some of whose names have survived to this day. Among other things, the Stubenrauchstrasse in Berlin-Friedenau is a reminder of the politician as part of the so-called " Carstenn figure ".

Further naming

Out of respect for the powerful district administrator in the neighboring district, the city of Rixdorf named a street running along the common border after his favorite holiday area in Harzer Straße , and other streets in the adjacent district after health resorts in the Harz that Stubenrauch appreciated ; including to Schierke, where he died.
