history

On March 1, 1974 Bothmer was incorporated into the community of Schwarmstedt.

In 2001 Bothmer celebrated its 900th anniversary. However, there are no documents that prove a precise date of foundation; however, Bothmer (as Batmere ) was mentioned in a document about 900 years ago.

In the area of ​​today's Bothmer finds from prehistoric epochs have been found in several places.

The manor Bothmer I is mentioned for the first time in 1340 as a knight seat of the noble von Bothmer family, who still live there today . The old house was built between 1500 and 1586 ; the tower and the new house , a half-timbered wing attached at right angles, followed in 1596, also in the style of the rural Low German Renaissance . The tower was changed later, the older wing no longer stands today.

Over the centuries, the following manors of the von Bothmer family were created through inheritance divisions:

Gutskapelle St. Matthaei
  • The St. Matthaei manor chapel was built in 1610 as a foundation by Canon Otto von Bothmer, who commissioned Abbot Conrad von Bothmer to build it. It served as a castle and community chapel until 1791, when it was closed and used as a granary. In 1981 it was restored as a chapel by Günther von Bothmer.
  • The so-called Bothmer Castle is an Art Nouveau villa that is privately inhabited in several residential units. There is a riding stable as well as a hotel and restaurant on the site.
  • The old village school Bothmer , built in 1909. One-class lessons were held in it until 1972. This was followed by restoration and conversion into a school museum. Today Bothmer has a kindergarten and a primary school (grades 1 to 4).
