The Wandlitzer See (also known as Wandlitzsee ) is a body of water north of Berlin that was formed during the Vistula Ice Age and the village of Wandlitz developed on its south and east banks . It belongs to the landscape of the Wandlitz Lake District .
useful information
The Wandlitzer See, 48.6 meters above sea level , is the largest lake in the lake area in terms of area. Its area is 2.15 km², the deepest point is given as 24 meters.
The peninsula in the south of the lake is the first populated area, it led to the development of today's center of Wandlitz . Only the historic village of Wandlitz and the district of Wandlitzsee are located directly on the water, which means that there was no continuous bank development. The natural flora and fauna have been preserved over long stretches, so that water lilies , spawning herbs , frogs and swans are also at home here.
The well-known as a noble fish for whitefish made lake with anglers early known. Because science cannot explain the presence of these fish, there is the legend “How the vendace got into the Wandlitzsee”, in which the devil once again plays an important role. A fountain set up in front of the beach restaurant in 2000 illustrates this story, which can be read in abbreviated form on a bronze plate set in the ground in front of it.
history
Ownership structure until 1945
The lake was sold to private individuals around 1830 from the property of the Prussian nobles. They used its abundance of fish and the reeds of the lake, otherwise it was possible to fish for a long time free of charge. Many families in the village also made a living from fishing. Any kind of sport such as swimming, diving, rowing or sailing was also possible. With the growth of excursion traffic from the city of Berlin, even motorized excursion boats operated on the lake, as historical postcards from 1910 prove. On the north-eastern shore of the lake, the brisk construction activity that began in 1900 resulted in the new district of Wandlitzsee. A lakeside promenade invited Berliners to relax, and a seaside resort was also opened in 1923. At that time, Wandlitz became a health resort .
Immediately in the area of the old village center, a small, unmanaged swimming area was built on the shores of the lake, which the Illvera association, which was founded in 1929, takes care of.
Wandlitzer See in public ownership until 2003
After the Second World War , the lake owners were expropriated and the water came into the possession of the Berlin Forests, where it remained until it was sold in 2003. When the GDR was founded, the lake was public property .
The change also brought about a major upheaval for the Wandlitzer See: the old lido with the attached former beach casino was completely rebuilt for 2.5 million euros - among other things, the bathing establishment received a new jetty and a modern diving platform in 1998/99 - and the beach casino became leased. Under the old name of the beach restaurant , it awaits the day trippers as always.
Privatization of the lake and its consequences
The unification agreement provided for a transfer of ownership to the federal government for state-owned lakes . And this was obliged to privatize the 300 or so lakes in Brandenburg .
The federally owned Bodenverwertungs- und -verwaltungs GmbH (BVVG) carried out sales tenders throughout Germany and a minimum bid was set (420,000 euros). The real estate company Teutonia with the Düsseldorf lawyer Werner Becker then acquired the Wandlitzer See in 2003. The municipality of Wandlitz (at that time only the current district of Wandlitz) had been granted a right of first refusal, but the equity and private donations did not provide the required minimum amount. Because the further public use of the lake through the lido, through free riverside paths and through non-motorized water sports were stipulated in the purchase contract, the state did not support the purchasing efforts of the municipality. Becker promised further uses in compliance with the Brandenburg Water Act.
"Interventions in the current use of the lake are not intended."
However, the new owners came up with a lucrative business after they had founded the Wandlitzsee Aktiengesellschaft : Every owner of a bathing jetty or jetty on the lake should buy shares or pay an annual rent (e.g. an annual lease was required for the jetty at the bathing establishment of 10,000 euros, for a normal walkway up to 30 m in length, up to 100 so-called preferred shares of 7,500 euros each should be acquired). In 2004 there were around 120 pier owners on the Wandlitzer See. Six landowners took advantage of this offer. A settlement was reached for the jetties of the bathing establishment after a legal dispute in 2005: In return for a one-off payment of 50,000 euros and a compensation for use of 10,000 euros twice, permanent use was fixed in the land register. According to information provided by residents, a payment is due to the owner even if water is taken from the lake. The domestic waterworks that were often used in the past and pumped and filtered water from the lake have become uneconomical and shut down. In addition, Wandlitzsee AG claims a 30 meter wide strip of shoreline resulting from the receding water surface of the lake. The measurements from the beginning of the 20th century served as the basis for sales. The temporary privatization of the Wandlitzer See is presented in more detail online from June 2011.
World War Finds
In autumn 2018, a bather discovered ammunition remains from the end of the Second World War while snorkeling in the shallow bank area . In early spring 2019, a munitions disposal service was commissioned with the detailed investigation and removal. But the divers discover more and more remains with their special equipment. For the time being, the lido could not be opened, and parts of the youth hostel and a nearby restaurant are also locked. Some finds are no longer transportable, so that underwater blasting had to be carried out. Specifically, two hand and rifle grenades, six rifle cartridges, a weapon part, a bazooka and several unidentifiable metal parts had been found and recovered by the beginning of May. Originally the company assumed that the work would be completed by the beginning of the main bathing season. However, the experts now estimate that the complete removal will take until August 2019, since a systematic search is now being carried out on the entire lake bed.
