Bauersee and Prenden on Openstreetmap, post-processed

The Bauersee was created as a natural body of water in a glacial meltwater channel, together with the neighboring Strehlesee and the Mittelprendensee . In historical documents the lake was called Prande , which probably led to the current name of the place.

The Bauersee is located northeast of the town of Prenden, it forms an elongated lake basin in a northeast-southwest direction. In the south the Pregnitz river flows into the lake, which leaves it again in the north. There is a hiking trail around the lake, which is also connected to the other nearby lakes and the Mergelluch. The route is advertised as a three-lake hiking trail by the Berlin Senate Administration. The shore region is not built on, but dense vegetation extends to the water. The Prendener golf course connects to the east bank .

Bathing area

In 1960, the then municipality of Prenden, together with government agencies of the GDR, set up a public bathing area on the lakeshore as part of the NAW . A restaurant, a water slide and five-meter high diving towers were available to visitors, and swimming masters from the DRK were on duty at the bathing area. In the following decades, the beach became neglected, the attractions initially offered such as Neptune Festival, performances by musicians or local swimming and jumping competitions were omitted. The towers and the slide had to be dismantled due to serious defects, and the restaurant fell into disrepair.

For a few years it was no longer allowed to bathe in the lake because the meat processing company located on the lake discharged the sewage into the lake.

After the fall of the Wall , the entire bathing area was abandoned and reeds, grass, bushes and trees began to overgrow the area. The place, which has belonged to Wandlitz since 2003, intends to revive the bathing area on the Bauersee. The mayor Hans-Joachim Auge advocates the provision of funds for the new facility in the local council, and he also tries to attract volunteers from the community for work. There is currently a free bathing area at the lake where you can swim at your own risk with a small lawn, sandy beach and a wooden shelter built in 2010.

fauna and Flora

The farm lake is listed as fishing water number 1424, it is naturally rich in fish. There are reports on stocks of white fish , pikeperch , tench , eel and pike. Gray herons and cormorants have been observed near the shore. Reeds, bushes, alders, beeches and pines form a belt of vegetation around the lake.

More about the lake

In August 2010, the Prenden administration marketed its summer party under the title Rund um den Bauersee , which probably built on its earlier fame. The lake should only serve as a backdrop for fireworks on a floating island. The Lower Nature Conservation Authority had not given permission for this.

Very close to the lake, in the midst of greenery, the GDR Ministry for State Security owned a building known as the Waldhaus , which was the so-called "management facility of the HVA". It was used as a meeting point for agents, but most likely also for recreational purposes for the administrative staff.
