The lichtenrade station is a Berlin S-Bahn station on the Berlin-Dresden railway in the district of Lichtenrade of the district Tempelhof-Schöneberg .

History and description

On June 17, 1875, the railway line from Berlin to Dresden was opened. Eight years later, the village of Lichtenrade received a stop on the still single-track line, which was opened on June 1, 1883. The 30 meter long side platform made of gravel was located south of today's Bahnhofstrasse. The track of the Prussian military railway ran on the west side from 1875 onwards , which was dismantled again in 1919 after the First World War .

In 1892 the line was expanded to two tracks, north of Bahnhofstrasse the two-story station building was built in yellow brickwork. The service rooms were on the ground floor of the unadorned functional building, and the station master's apartment was on the upper floor. To the north of it, a civil servants' house was built in the same style, between the two there were single-storey utility and toilet buildings.

The side platform was replaced in 1909/10 by a central platform at its current location. A loading siding and the siding of a malt house were built on the east side .

A pedestrian tunnel was built from the southern end of the platform, which branched off to both streets, so that passengers could reach the trains even when the gates of the Bahnhofstrasse - Prinzessinnenstrasse street were closed. Glazed shelters in “greenhouse architecture” were built over the street-side stairs, with signs with the station name Lichtenrade above the doors . Ticket sales and ticket inspections took place at a counter in the middle of the third shelter at the transition to the platform.

The platform roof was carried out with sixteen central supports. A service room, a waiting room and a toilet were built on the platform. A kiosk was added in 1925, and a splinter bunker during the Second World War . In the course of the electrification of the line with a lateral conductor rail , the platform was raised by 20 cm in 1939. Electric S-Bahn traffic began on May 15, 1939.

As a result of the fighting during the Second World War , S-Bahn traffic ceased in April 1945. On August 19 of that year, suburban traffic was resumed on just one track, initially with steam locomotives , and then with electric railcars on September 8. From 1948 there were temporary connections with diesel multiple units in the direction of Grünau at the same edge of the platform.

After the Wall was built, there was no longer any train traffic beyond Lichtenrade to the south from August 13, 1961, the station became the terminus. The railway barriers were dismantled, but the access tunnel retained its function. The two tracks ended at buffer stops in front of Bahnhofstrasse. The signal box Lrd at the north end of the station was shut down at the turn of the year 1977/78, only one platform track was used from then on.

On January 9, 1984, the management of the S-Bahn was transferred from the Deutsche Reichsbahn to the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG), Lichtenrade initially became the end point of a (remaining) line from Anhalter Bahnhof. In that year, the access tunnel was closed and the platform has been reached at ground level since then. The tunnel (covered) and the three glass shelters of the old access structure were preserved. Two of them are still used as bicycle shelters and bus shelters, the one on the platform is opened as a passage at the back.

During the double-track expansion of the line to Lichtenrade, a double track change in a trapezoidal shape was built, and a siding was also built on the east side. The table of the new signal box was housed in the supervisory building.

After reunification , the line beyond Lichtenrade was rebuilt as a single track (western track) and the level crossing was reactivated. On August 28, 1992, the line extension, initially to Mahlow , went into operation.

The Marienfelde electronic signal box went into operation on April 3, 2018, and it also controls the track systems in Lichtenrade station. At the same time, the new S-Bahn Berlin (ZBS) train control system went into operation.

Contrary to the generally clearance procedures ZAT the train clearance is at this station by the dispatcher as local supervision .

The ensemble of the train station with some surrounding structures ("train station building and civil servants' house, Landhaus Lichtenrade with garden, malthouse of the Schloßbrauerei Schöneberg") is on the list of monuments of the State of Berlin. The station with “station building and civil servants' residence, 1892; Central platform with furniture, platform houses, access houses, 1900/10 "designated as a single monument .

future

As part of the reconstruction of the long-distance tracks of the Dresden Railway, the Lichtenrade station will also be extensively rebuilt in the coming years. The Bahnhofstrasse level crossing will be replaced by a street underpass. The S-Bahn platform will be rebuilt on the overpass and the bus stops will be arranged below it. The historic station building is to be demolished regardless of the monument protection, including the central platform and the access. Preparatory work on clearing the construction site such as tree felling, ammunition search and laying of lines began in October 2017. Since May 2020, the level crossing on Bahnhofstrasse has been closed to car traffic. In this context, track 2, which previously ended at the S-Bahn platform, was tied further in the direction of Blankenfelde, instead track 1 now ends at the platform.

Connection

The station is served by the S2 line of the Berlin S-Bahn .
