Hartwig Schmidt

Hartwig Schmidt (born April 19, 1942 in Höxter ; † April 29, 2016 in Karlsruhe ) was a German building researcher and monument conservator .

Life

After an apprenticeship as a roofer, Schmidt attended the State Engineering School for Construction in Höxter and then the Höxter Building School . He then studied architecture at the TU Berlin and was awarded a Dr.-Ing. Doctorate (Doctorate) PhD. He then worked for the Berlin State Monuments Office, where he was temporarily in charge of the inventory, and received a position financed by the Volkswagen Foundation in the architecture department at the headquarters of the German Archaeological Institute in Berlin . The result of this work was published in two volumes, Schutzbauten (1988) and Reconstruction (1989).

In 1985 he went to the Technical University of Karlsruhe as head of the Collaborative Research Center SFB 315 “Preserving Historically Significant Buildings”. In this position, he was commissioned in 1990 to develop a comprehensive planning concept for the future of the archaeological site in Olympia in terms of monument preservation .

In 1993 he became professor for monument preservation and historical building research at the Faculty of Architecture at the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Universität Aachen . There he taught and researched until his retirement in 2006.

Since 1976 he was a member of the Archaeological Society of Berlin and a member of the Society for the History of Building Technology.

Schmidt was married to the architectural theorist Uta Hassler .
