Klaus Herrmann (building researcher)

Klaus Herrmann (born March 21, 1940 in Berlin ; † November 27, 2015 in Munich ) was a German building researcher .

Klaus Herrmann graduated from the mathematics and science high school in Berlin. He studied architecture at the Technical University of Berlin and graduated in 1969 with a diploma. Ernst Heinrich's building history lectures had a great influence on him . On the mediation of Heinrich he became a student assistant to Emil Kunze and Alfred Mallwitz for the Olympic excavation. From 1974 he had a research grant from the German Archaeological Institute . From 1976/77 to 1983 he was Gottfried Gruben's assistant at the Munich Chair for Building History at the Technical University of Munich . From July 1969 he worked for the Olympic excavation. In 1985 he succeeded Alfred Mallwitz as excavation architect. Herrmann was deputy excavation manager from 1992 to 2005. The position was not filled again. Even in retirement, he took on numerous tasks of excavation architect for another ten years. He was married and had a son.

For five decades Herrmann devoted himself to research in Olympia , especially the monuments, their exploration and their presentation. In Olympia he repeatedly occupied himself with the architecture of the treasure houses lined up on a terrace at the foot of the Kronos Hill . In 1974 he presented his observations on treasure house architecture during the international colloquium on the occasion of the centenary of the Olympic excavation. Herrmann dealt extensively with the ruins of the treasury of Sikyon. The partial reconstruction he planned could be carried out between 1975 and 1977. The highlight of the historical reconstruction was the rebuilding of one of the circular hall columns of the Temple of Zeus . He also worked extensively on the Gela Treasury.
