Emil Kunze

Emil Kunze (born December 18, 1901 in Dresden ; † January 13, 1994 in Pullach ) was a German classical archaeologist and longtime excavator of Olympia .

Kunze studied classical archeology in Vienna and Leipzig and received his doctorate in Leipzig in 1926 under Franz Studniczka with the dissertation “Cretan works in chased bronze from the early Archaic period”. In 1926/27 he received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute , and from 1929 to 1933 he worked at the Athens Department of the German Archaeological Institute . 1935–1937 he was assistant to the museum for casts of classical sculptures in Munich. In 1937 he completed his habilitation at the University of Munich , where he was appointed a non-official extraordinary professor. In 1938 he was entrusted with the management of the excavation work in Olympia , which he held until they were stopped due to the war in 1942. From 1942 to 1945 he was Professor of Classical Archeology at the Imperial University of Strasbourg . From 1946 he taught as an honorary professor in Munich.

From 1951 to 1966 Kunze was the first director of the German Archaeological Institute in Athens and resumed the excavations in Olympia . He wrote important, linguistically high quality contributions to the art history of Greece in the geometrical and archaic periods . In 1972 he was reappointed honorary professor at the University of Munich and was one of the organizers of the major Olympic exhibition in Munich.

Since 1951 he was a corresponding member of the Göttingen , since 1952 he was a corresponding, since 1968 a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . In 1971 he was admitted to the British Academy as a corresponding member .

His son was the musicologist Stefan Kunze .
