Ulf Jantzen

Ulf Jantzen (born April 5, 1909 in Florence , † March 4, 2000 in Hamburg ) was a German classical archaeologist .

The son of the art historian Hans Jantzen studied classical archeology and received his doctorate in Munich in 1936. From 1960 to 1969 he was Professor of Classical Archeology at the University of Hamburg and from 1967 to 1974 First Director of the German Archaeological Institute in Athens . As such, he was the long-time leader of the excavations on Samos . In 1974 he was awarded the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
