Hans Georg Niemeyer

Hans Georg Niemeyer (born November 30, 1933 in Hamburg ; † September 5, 2007 ) was a German classical archaeologist .

After attending the learned school of the Johanneum in Hamburg, Hans Georg Niemeyer studied archeology, classical philology and ancient history in Marburg and Hamburg . In addition to studying, Niemeyer completed an apprenticeship as a sculptor . In 1959 he did his doctorate in Hamburg under Ernst Homann-Wedeking on promachos. Investigations into the representation of the armed Athena in archaic times . This was followed by a scholarship from the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) until 1961 . Then Niemeyer worked as an assistant to Heinz Kähler at the University of Cologne . During this time he completed his habilitation in 1966 on the subject of studies on the statuary representation of Roman emperors . From 1970 he taught as a scientific advisor and professor . In 1980 he went back to his hometown Hamburg as a professor, where he worked until his retirement .

Hans Georg Niemeyer was the head of the excavations of the Phoenician colony Toscanos near Torre del Mar ( Vélez Málaga , Málaga , Andalusia ) in southern Spain and the investigation of the Punic urban settlement structure in Carthage in Tunisia. From 1974 to 1978 Niemeyer was chairman of the German Archaeological Association . He was also a member of the Academy of Sciences in Hamburg , a full member of the DAI and a corresponding member of the Hispanic Society in New York , the Real Academia de la Historia in Madrid and the Commissione per gli studi Fenici e Punici of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei in Rome . He died on September 5, 2007.
