Helmut Kyrieleis

Helmut Kyrieleis (born January 10, 1938 in Hamburg ) is a German classical archaeologist .

Life

The son of the ophthalmologist and professor Werner Kyrieleis in 1965 in Marburg with a thesis throne and klinai doctorate and habilitated 1972 on portraits of the Ptolemies at the University of Bonn , where he became 1974 extraordinary professor was appointed. Between 1972 and 1974 he was first director at the headquarters of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) and headed the Athens department of the DAI from 1975 to 1988 . From 1988 to 2003 he was President of the DAI.

From 1976 to 1984 Kyrieleis directed the German excavations in Heraion of Samos and then from 1985 the excavations in Olympia .

Kyrieleis is an honorary doctorate from the University of Athens and a corresponding member of the Academies of Science in Athens and Tbilisi .
