Carl Weickert

Carl Weickert (born February 24, 1885 in Leipzig , † May 1, 1975 in Berlin ) was a German classical archaeologist .

Weickert studied German studies in Jena from 1905 and classical archeology in Munich from 1906. After receiving his doctorate on The Lesbian Kymation in 1912, he worked on the real catalog of the Rome department of the German Archaeological Institute . During the First World War he became a soldier and then from 1919 a curator at the Museum for Casts of Classical Image Works of the Archaeological Institute of the University of Munich , where he completed his habilitation in 1929 on types of archaic architecture in Greece and Asia Minor and became an associate professor in 1933. From 1934 Weickert was director of the Staatliche Antikensammlung in Munich, from 1936 of the Antikensammlung of the Berlin museums . After the war, from 1946 to 1950 he worked as a professor with a teaching position at the Humboldt University in Berlin . From 1947 to 1954, Weickert was President of the German Archaeological Institute, which he had been acting provisionally headed since 1945. From 1948 to 1955 he was also chairman of the Archaeological Society in Berlin .

Weickert was involved in the excavations of Miletus for a long time . He was a full member of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin (1946–1950), a foreign member of the Pontificia Accademia Romana di Archeologia (from 1951), a foreign honorary member of the Archaeological Institute of America (from 1954) and an honorary member of the Greek Archaeological Society of Athens ( 1939).
