Florian Knauß
Florian S. Knauß (born June 18, 1963 in Darmstadt ) is a German classical archaeologist. Since 2011 he has been director of the Staatliche Antikensammlungen and Glyptothek Munich. After attending the humanistic Ratsgymnasium in Bielefeld, Florian Knauß studied from 1984 to 1993 at the Saarland University, the University of Würzburg and the Free University of Berlin, Classical Archeology, Ancient History and Near Eastern Archeology. In 1993 he was at the University of Saarland with a thesis on The linear island style . A Cycladic ceramic workshop at the transition from the late Geometric to the archaic period under Friedrich Hiller did his doctorate.
From 1993 to 1994 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Near Eastern Archeology at Saarland University and deputy excavation director in Tell Sheikh Hassan (Syria). He then became a research assistant at the Archaeological Seminar of the University of Münster . Since 1998 he has headed the DFG project Colchis and Iberia there . On April 1, 2001, he switched to the Staatliche Antikensammlungen und Glyptothek Munich as a curator, and since May 1, 2011, he has succeeded Raimund Wünsche as its director.
From 1994 to 2000 Knauß took part in the excavations of the German-Georgian Kakheti expedition as deputy excavation manager . Since 2006 he has headed the excavation project near Karačamirli (Azerbaijan), financed by the Gerda Henkel Foundation , which is being carried out in cooperation with the Azerbaijani National Academy of Sciences in Baku and the National Museum Tbilisi . Since January 1, 2002 Knauß has been a member of the Achaemenid Research Team ( Réseau international d'études et de recherches achéménides ), funded by the Center national de la recherche scientifique , and a member of the comité de pilotage of the specialist website Achemenet . Since November 1, 2011 he has been a member of the commission for the Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum Germany of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .
