Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum Germany

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum Germany is the German sub-project of the international Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum (CVA).

The project and its history

The aim of this project is to research and publish ancient ceramics in German public collections according to standardized criteria. The project was founded in 1920; Germany was only accepted as a result of the First World War in 1935. The first German volume appeared in 1938.

For the Corpus Vasorum quorum Germany on behalf of the German's Academies , the Bavarian Academy of Sciences in Munich responsible. This has set up its own commission for the Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum . The editorial work is done by a permanent editor , since 2006 Stefan Schmidt . Since such basic research can hardly be carried out by individual collections today, as the financial resources are usually lacking to pay the editors, the central organization and financing is a guarantee for the success of the project in Germany. The editors of the individual volumes are employed by the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and not by the collections or museums for the duration of their work. Often these were and are young classical archaeologists at the beginning of their careers, but museum employees or well-known vase researchers have also written volumes. Thus, as external employees, they have to fit into the structure of the museums, on whose resources such as restorers, photographers and draftsmen they are dependent. Current research assistants in the project are Georg Gerleigner, Bettina Kreuzer , Susanne Pfisterer-Haas , Laura Puritani, Bettina Reichardt, Angelika Schöne-Denkinger and Martin Schulz (as of January 2019).

The governing body of the CVA Germany is the advisory board of the commission for the Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum . Due to his membership in the Bavarian Academy of Sciences, Paul Zanker is automatically chairman . He chairs the advisory board, which currently includes Christian Kunze , Klaus Fittschen and Bodil Bundgaard Rasmussen as deputy chairmen . Advisory stands by the Committee on the corpus Vasorum quorum , the Matthias Steinhart presides, deputy Martin Bentz , other members are Florian Knauss , Stefan Schmidt and Andreas Scholl .

An employee currently needs about two years to create a volume if he can work on it in a full-time position. Six volumes were published between 1938 and 1944, and the seventh volume appeared after the war in 1951. In the 1950s, 12 volumes were published; 1959 was particularly productive with five volumes published, including three from the GDR. In the 1960s, 12 volumes were published again, 14 each in the 1970s and 1980s, and 13 in the 1990s. The workload has been intensified since the mid-2000s, and coverage for German museums could thus be achieved in the 2040s. The project is currently secured by the German academies until 2030. In the 2000s, 15 volumes were published, in the 2010s 14 volumes were published so far.

Naturally, the majority of the volumes belong to the large German vase collections. So far, 18 volumes have been published for the Staatliche Antikensammlungen in Munich and 16 volumes for the Antikensammlung Berlin ; a total of 100 volumes with the holdings of German collections have been published by 2016. But many smaller public collections (such as Karlsruhe, Schloss Fasanerie and Schwerin) have also been completely processed, as well as the holdings of numerous German university collections. The first CVA volume dedicated to an Austrian collection appeared after the “ Anschluss ” in 1941 as volume 5 of the German series. In 1971 the GDR ended its participation in the project organized from Munich and began a series of its own counting of the volumes. Of these, however, only three volumes appeared between 1972 and 1990. After the reunification of the two German states, the East German collections are also published again in the Munich series.

The volumes of the Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum are published by Verlag CH Beck , with the exception of the nine volumes published between 1959 and 1990 on collections in the GDR that were published by the Akademie-Verlag .

Text and tables of all German CVA volumes up to volume 76 are freely accessible on the Internet. Up to and including volume 72, each volume was published in individual tables, supplemented by a booklet with the explanatory texts and indices in a protective cover. Since volume 73, the tables and text have been a bound hardcover book.

Not within the series or collections collections will be published again, which were published even before the creation of the CVA volumes of comparable quality, such as 1931 by Wilhelm Kraiker published Teilsammlung Attic - red-figure pottery of the Museum of Ancient Art at the University of Heidelberg .
