Frank Brommer (born September 8, 1911 in Berlin , † April 21, 1993 in Koblenz ) was a German classical archaeologist .

Career

Frank Brommer received his doctorate on Satyroi in 1937 with Ernst Buschor in Munich . He then received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute and worked as an assistant at the University of Marburg and as a research assistant at the German Archaeological Institute in Athens . In 1942 he joined the Archaeological Society of Berlin , in 1943 he was elected a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute .

From 1940 to 1945 Brommer served in World War II . In addition, he completed his habilitation on December 6, 1944 at the University of Berlin . In 1946 he went to the University of Marburg as an assistant, where he acquired the Venia legendi for Classical Archeology and was appointed associate professor in 1951. In 1958 he accepted a chair for Classical Archeology at the University of Mainz as the successor to Roland Hampe , where he worked until his retirement in 1976. Brommer was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton (New Jersey) in 1958 and 1962 , Geddes-Harrower Professor in Aberdeen in 1978 and Visiting Scholar at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Malibu . Brommer was a full member and member of the central management of the German Archaeological Institute .

Frank Brommer's interests were primarily the sculpture and vase painting of classical Greece , especially the depictions of myths. Four of his books alone are dedicated to the sculptures of the Parthenon on the Acropolis of Athens. His work on the images of individual gods and heroes, such as Heracles , Hephaestus , Theseus and Odysseus, found widespread distribution . His lists of depictions of the Greek heroic saga were indispensable tools for decades. Frank Brommer's writings are characterized by object-relatedness and methodological rigor and also reproduce complex issues clearly and concisely.

He donated his private antique collection to the antique collection of the Berlin museums .

Frank Brommer was born in 1942 with the prehistorian Elisabeth. Krebs (1911–1986) married. He is the father of the biologist Bettina Brommer and the historian and archivist Peter Brommer .
