Robert Fleischer (archaeologist)

Robert Fleischer (born January 16, 1941 in Vienna ) is an Austrian classical archaeologist .

Life

Robert Fleischer studied Classical Archeology and Ancient History at the University of Vienna from 1958 to 1963 . After completing his doctorate in Vienna, he was an assistant at the Austrian Archaeological Institute . He carried out excavations in Immurium ( Moosham ) and research among others in Sagalassos ( Pisidia ) and Ephesus , here mainly on sculptures. He completed his habilitation in 1973 with a thesis on Artemis of Ephesus in Vienna and then taught as a university lecturer at the Institute for Ancient History, Archeology and Epigraphy at the University of Vienna. In 1975 he got theCardinal Innitzer Prize for the Humanities awarded. In 1976/77 he held a chair at the University of Bochum . In 1977 he was appointed to succeed Frank Brommer at the University of Mainz, where he taught until his retirement in 2006. In 1989 he was Kress Lecturer at the Archaeological Institute of America and visiting professor at Bryn Mawr College, USA. He carried out further field research in Herakleia Salbake ( Caria ), Amasya ( Pontos ) and Termessos (Pisidia).

Robert Fleischer is a full member of the German Archaeological Institute , was a member of its central management and the technical committee of the Orient Department; he is a real member of the Austrian Archaeological Institute, Membre associé étranger of the Société des antiquaires de France and Corresponding Member of the Archaeological Institute of America .
