Moosham Castle belongs to the municipality of Unternberg im Lungau , Salzburg .

history

First mentioned in 1191, it fell to the Archbishops of Salzburg in 1285. In the 14th century it became the seat of the district judges and keepers . Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach had the medieval castle expanded until 1577.

In 1790 the Moosham nursing court was dissolved by Archbishop Colloredo , the last nurse was Johann Wenzel von Helmreich zu Brunfeld, after which the castle fell into disrepair.

In 1886 Johann Nepomuk Graf Wilczek bought the facility. Before that, he had already invested considerable funds in Kreuzenstein Castle from 1874 onwards . Moosham Castle is still owned by the family today. It is open to the public and has a rich art collection that was compiled by the lord of the castle. It includes finds from the Romans from this area as well as a number of well-preserved files and torture tools from the time of the witch trials .

The pianist Cecil Taylor recorded his album Air Above Mountains (Buildings Within) here at a festival in 1976 .

Location

The castle was mentioned as a fictional setting in 1981 in a radio play in the horror radio play series by radio play label Europa (episode no. 11: The Pact with the Devil), and in 2019 in the 147th episode of the series "Horror Cabinet" by Titania-Medien ("Die Höllenfahrt des Schörgen-Toni "). Alleged legends and legends of the area are also mentioned within both radio plays. Since the beginning of the 2000s, the castle has been used several times for film productions. The Austrian fairy tale film Rumpelstiltskin from 2007 based on the fairy tale of the same name by the Brothers Grimm was released in 2005/06 a. a. produced in Schloss Moosham for the film series Märchenperlen . Furthermore, the castle was the location of the production, published in 2012, Beauty and the Beast . In autumn 2016, parts of the television film Die Ketzerbraut were shot at Moosham Castle.
