Origin Castle is a baroque mansion in the Salzburg Flachgau region and is now part of the higher federal college for agriculture Ursprung .

location

The Ursprung Castle is now located in the Ursprung part of the Elixhausen community in the Flachgau region of Salzburg. Built on a ridge that connects the Haunsberg with the Hochgitzen , it is almost 170 meters above the Salzach level. This enables the view of the Salzburg mountain landscape, especially the Untersberg , and even the Hohensalzburg Fortress .

About the name

The name "Ursprung" is derived from the Middle or Old High German "urspring" or "ursprinc". The use of "original" was similar to that of our "source" today. Specifically, the name refers to the source of the Mattig , which is located in the immediate vicinity of the castle. The name " Hofmark Ursprung" is also attested to the estate . The designation as a castle is misleading because it is actually a manor house .

history

The first documented mention of the property, in the spelling at that time, Ursprinch , was made in 1122 in a document from Archbishop Konrad I. Count of Abensberg from the von Abensberg family (noble family) as a peasant inheritance. It was not until the purchase of the property on September 13, 1670 by the court and war councilor Augustin Friedrich von Hegi that it was transformed into a manor house. Hegi acquired the hunting rights and the licensing rights for the areas of the estate, which at that time amounted to around 100  hectares . He also obtained approval for a brewery.

After the death of Augustin Friedrich von Hegi in 1686, the baron Johann Friedrich von Rehlingen (noble family) married the widow Hegis. After a fire in the old manor house, he built the Ursprung Castle in its current form in 1707. The alliance coat of arms above the entrance contains the following inscription (translation from Latin): " This noble seat, destroyed by fire at the end of the last century, was rebuilt by Johann Friedrich Baron von Rehlingen in the year of salvation in 1707. "

In 1773 there was an inheritance dispute, the settlement of which and the resulting harmony among the three brothers is still reminiscent of the so-called Three Brothers Chapel a little south of the origin.

It was not until 1823 that the old family changed hands again when master brewer Sigmund Hofmann bought it and the brewery. 90 years later, the new owner Josef Sigl, who already owned the brewery in Obertrum that still exists today, ceased brewing. In 1930 the property was sold again. The buyer was Paul Krennwallner, who set up a model farm here. The former main castle now served as a residential building.

The current chapter of the castle begins in 1962 with the acquisition of the property by the Republic of Austria. From 1965 to 1967 they built the higher federal college for agriculture in Ursprung, which is still in existence today . At the instigation of the school management, the brewery building with the integrated residence of the Baron von Hegi was demolished in 1977 ; instead a parking lot was created. The Ursprung mansion appears to be in need of renovation today.

Architectural description

The south-facing castle itself has three floors, with a double-armed staircase outside leading to the first floor. The family coat of arms of the Rehlinger-Gienger family, including a baron crown, is still attached to this portal today. The rooms behind on the first and second floors form the master rooms at that time, while the servants' chambers were to be found on the ground floor next to the bakery. There is evidence of its own house chapel dating back to 1716. This was abandoned in favor of an independent chapel, which was broken up again around a hundred years later.
