The Saalhof Castle is a castle in Maishofen and one of the oldest residences in Pinzgau . The current building dates from the beginning of the 17th century, however, during renovation work, significantly older foundations and parts of the wall were found on the north and east sides of the building, to which today's castle was added around 1600. In 1766, the famous Salzburg botanist Franz Anton Alexander von Braune was born in the palace .

The ensemble , consisting of the castle, Meierhaus and wayside cross , has been a listed building since 1992 . The buildings are privately owned and not open to the public, but there is an accommodation facility in the building .

history

A marble plaque above the palace portal announces the end of construction in 1606

In 1296 the aristocratic seat was probably owned by "Konrad the Devil". The estate was initially an archbishop's fief , which was first mentioned in documents in 1423 in the possession of Oswald Eisenstang. In 1584 it passed to the Amann von Judendorf family. Under Cristoff Amann von Judendorf zu Saal, the typical Pinzgau aristocratic seat, as it can still be seen today, was built at the beginning of the 17th century. A marble plaque above the keel arches portals that the construction work ended in 1606. Much of the interior furnishings also date from this time.

In 1634 the castle came to the Riedl family. A splendid coat of arms on the first floor attests to the marriage of Mathias Riedl von und zu Saal 1661 to Maria Riedlin nee. Stöcklin from Judendorf. When the property came to the Kobald von Dambach zu Moll family in 1714, there was a house chapel with a mass license in the castle .

After Maria Anna von Hackledt became the owner of the property in 1759, she bequeathed it to her four children in 1765. Her daughter Elisabeth Amalia married Rochus von Braun and took over the property in 1798. When the Weißbach landlord Josef Zehentner bought it in 1840, the castle came into peasant ownership and has been inherited by this family ever since. In 1855 the son Johann Zehentner took over the castle and in 1874 he bequeathed the castle to his daughter Maria and her husband Josef Schattbacher. The estate came to the Rieder family through their son Johann, as the farmer Wolfgang Rieder had married Johann's daughter Ida in 1939. Their son Wolfgang and his wife Rosa succeeded them in the company in 1969. In 1971 they had the old stables ( First dating 1828 and 1586) torn down and replaced by a new building.

A comprehensive renovation of the Saalhofgut and the palace took place from 2004 onwards by the couple Hermann and Kathrin Rieder, who also renovated the facade in 2010 and restored its original color scheme from the 17th century. Since 2006 the castle owners have offered holiday apartments and guest rooms for rent.

The Meierhaus on the eastern side of the complex used to be the home for the manager ( Meier ), the servants and the servants . The year on the gable indicates 1686 as the year of construction. The building was used as a school for Maishofen around 1814.
