Mattsee Castle

The Mattsee Castle is located on a Schlossberg im Mattsee , which is partially surrounded by water, in the Austrian municipality of Mattsee , which has owned the property since 1949.

Archaeological finds from the 1950s show that the Schlossberg, which was a rocky island in prehistoric times, was already inhabited in the Neolithic . Today's palace complex goes back to a castle built around 1100 by order of the Passau bishops; in 1294 the Reckturm was completed. Under the impression of the attack by Salzburg troops in 1319 in the course of the throne dispute between Ludwig IV and the Habsburgs , a moat was dug in 1325, which gave the complex the character of an island. After several changes of rulership, the castle went to the Archbishopric of Salzburg in 1398 and was expanded into a summer residence for the Archbishops of Salzburg by the 17th century. The Prince Archbishops Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau , Markus Sittikus von Hohems and Paris Lodron used the castle for hunting and recreation. In the following centuries, the building fell into disrepair, and in the 19th century the castle was even used as a quarry for building materials for the construction of new buildings in the area. It was not until 1998 to 2003 that Mattsee Castle was rebuilt according to the original plans. Today the castle is used for a wide variety of events, including the “ Diabellisommer ” concert series . There is also a castle café and the Leonardo Art Academy.

Below the castle is a so-called ice cellar , which was built by Obertrumer Bräu Josef Sigl in 1871 and is now used as a quiet place.
