Herrnau Castle

The Herrnau Castle is located next to the Hellbrunn Alley south of the city of Salzburg .

The name Herrnau is derived from the term “Au” used by the noble lords and originally referred to a part of the mighty alluvial forest between Hellbrunner Allee and Salzach . The word 1574 appears for the first time as "the Herrnau".

In 1631 the former valet Philip Vermeulen built the Herrenhof Herrnau (today Eschenbachgasse 21). The castle is called a knight's fief. In 1685 the valet Johann Jakob Perger became the owner, who called himself "von Pergrain" after being raised to the imperial nobility by Emperor Leopold I. 1741–1744 the palace was brought into its present form by the court chancellor Hieronymus Nikolaus Anton Christani von Rall (who liked to call himself Christani di Rallo in Italian ). As the court chancellor of Prince Archbishop Leopold Anton von Firmian, Christani was the dogmatic mastermind and enforcer of the Protestants' expulsion in 1731/32, and gained notoriety throughout Europe. The building was named after him as Christianihof ; his coat of arms is above the entrance door. The von Quabeck family later owned the farm. In 1805, Elector Ferdinand of Tuscany owned the castle, and from 1846 it was owned by Count Kuenburg . Today it is owned by the Clary-Aldringen family .

The palace, located on the now-dry Eschenbach, which originated in Hellbrunn Palace Park, is oriented towards the east portal of Hellbrunn Palace . It is a typical Salzburg country palace with three high floors, raised by a high hipped roof. The stair tower in the south is attached to the building and has the marble coat of arms of Christani von Rall, above which the coat of arms of Count Kuenburg is attached.

The castle, surrounded by a park, is not open to the public.
