history
Neuhaus Castle was probably built at the beginning of the 13th or the end of the 12th century. Chunradus de nova domo (Konrad von Neuhaus) is first mentioned in 1219. At the beginning of the 14th century the castle came into the ownership of the prince archbishopric and was in 1424 under Archbishop Eberhard III. von Neuhaus expanded into a well-fortified summer residence.
In 1508 Neuhaus became the seat of a nursing court , later also a regional court . In 1599, the building was so dilapidated that the keeper (judge) moved to Gnigl. During the Thirty Years War the castle had a very important function in connection with the Gnigler Schanze and the Franziskischlössl to defend the city and its surroundings. After 1650 the castle was made habitable again for the nursing court. In 1695 a lightning strike and a fire caused great damage, the seat of the court had to move again.
The Pfleg- and district court included near the end of Fürsterzbistums Neuhaus the Hofmark Gnigl that Schrannen Heuberg , Bergheim , Hallwang and Eugendorf , the Prince Chiemseeische Freigericht coupling , and the Baron-Relingsche Hofmark origin . The parish of Bergheim , the parish curate Gnigl , and the vicariates of Eugendorf , Hallwang and Koppel were subordinate .
Oswald Graf Thun first rented the castle in 1796 and then bought it in 1811. From 1851 onwards, various neo-Gothic, historicizing jewelry was added.
In 1921 Wolfgang Freiherr von Thienen-Adlerflycht received the castle as a gift on the occasion of his wedding to Anna Countess von Thun . Soon after, his relative, Count Adolf Dubsky, bought the castle. This count was a half-brother of Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach nee. Countess Dubsky, who was a frequent guest at Neuhaus Castle.
Until recently, the castle was privately owned by the Topić Mimara family; it was acquired by the famous painter Ante Topić Mimara in 1963. With its gallery, it offered a home for contemporary art .
It is currently owned by the German industrialist Hubertus Benteler and is not open to the public.
It is a listed building .
Building description
The castle consists of the mighty residential tower, an elongated residential building and the former servants' wing, which are surrounded by a fortified enclosure that was provided with a crenellated crown by the then owner Oswald Graf Thun in the 19th century. Access to the castle is from the south. The old residential tower, which dates back to the 13th century and which was raised to five storeys after 1400, has also been crowned with battlements since the 19th century. A few decades ago, many historicizing ingredients were removed again. A marble slab in the courtyard above the door to the stairwell comes from the former Einödhof in Morzg and shows an angel with the coat of arms of Count Johann Ernst von Thun.
The dominant center of the complex (auxiliary building, modern new building, farm building) is still today the five-storey medieval residential tower.
