The Golling Castle is a hilltop castle in Austria Golling an der Salzach , in the state of Salzburg . It is relatively large by Austrian standards and is located in a strategically important location on the Salzach in Salzburg's Tennengau .
history
There was probably a watchtower on the hill, which is well protected by rocks , as early as Roman times . From here the passing Roman road Virunum - Iuvavum could be observed. The nearby Lueg Pass between the Hagen Mountains and the Tennen Mountains was an important transition as early as the Bronze Age .
A moth (tower hill castle) made of wood could have been the forerunner of the stone hill fort built in the 13th century . In 1325 it was handed over to the Kuchlern , an aristocratic family from Salzburg, for a transfer fee of 300 pounds of silver pennies. But they soon sold them to the Archbishop of Salzburg . From now on, appointed keepers were appointed as administrators of the castle by the archbishop.
In 1722, Prince Archbishop Franz Anton von Harrach visited the castle and had it renovated and equipped with a heated prince's room.
museum
In 1971 a museum was established in the castle. There are not only objects from the history of the castle, but also fossil finds from the area. Not least because of the museum, but also because of the events that are regularly held there in summer, the facility is a popular excursion destination for locals and tourists.
Golling Castle Festival
The non-profit association Kunst & Musik Forum Golling has been organizing the Burg Golling Festival since 1999. There were 17 events in the 2019 season. The program offers a colorful mix of classical chamber music, readings, chansons and jazz.
