Roman road Virunum - Iuvavum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Roman road Virunum - Iuvavum was a Roman imperial road and an important Alpine crossing in antiquity , which already connected the city on the Magdalensberg with a Celtic settlement near Salzburg under the Tauris . Under the Romans this traffic route was elevated to the Reichsstraße and connected the Municipium Claudium Virunum on the Zollfeld near Maria Saal near Klagenfurt with the Municipium Iuvavum , which had emerged from the Celtic settlement near Salzburg.

Research history

The historian Michael Franz Jabornegg von Altenfels suspected the course over the Radstädter Tauern and further over Friesach , but this could not be reconciled with the location and distance information in the Tabula Peutingeriana . Konrad Miller saw the route over the Radstädter Tauern as secure due to finds and, based on the distance information, assumed the further course over the Upper Mur Valley to the Stadl an der Mur / Steindorf / Paal (Graviacum) area and from there via Flattnitz (Tarnasicum, 1400 m), the Flattnitzer Höhe into the Gurktal and further over Zweinitz (Beliandrum) and Treibach (Matucaium) to the Zollfeld - a thesis that still holds up today, but has not been proven.

course

The road connection, which already existed with the Tauris , ran from Virunum over the Radstädter Tauern Pass to Iuvavum and is easy to understand from the Roman milestones, other finds and the distance information on the Tabula Peutingeriana. From north to south the following post stations ( Mansio ) are listed on the Tabula Peutingeriana :

Today, however, there is uncertainty in the southern section of the route. While the route over the Flattnitzer Höhe was suspected for a long time , a variant over the Turracher Höhe is also conceivable: Tarnasicum would be equated with Turrach and Feldkirchen with Beliandrum, with which the route runs via St. Peter am Bichl to Virunum . This thesis is supported by a milestone and other finds in St. Peter as well as an excavated Roman settlement in Feldkirchen and the fact that there are no finds from Flattnitz and Zweinitz.

From Virunum there were also imperial roads to Ovilava , Aquileia and Celeia , from Iuvavum there were imperial roads to Ovilava and the Via Julia to Augusta Vindelicorum . The road was thus also a section of the Via Julia Augusta from Aquileia to Augusta Vindelicorum.

Todays situation

Many streets are currently following the historical route, such as Halleiner Landesstraße or Katschberg Straße over the Radstädter Tauern Pass. The mine stones are also visible in several places over the Tauern Pass. Raimund Kastler sketched the exact route from Pass Lueg to Iuvavum.
