Via Julia Augusta (Noricum Province)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Via Julia Augusta (also Via Iulia Augusta ) was a Roman road that was laid out in the reign of Emperor Augustus .

From Aquileia it led northwards via Iulium Carnicum and the Plöckenpass to the Drautal where it split at Irschen ( castrum Ursen from "dux Ursus" - the name of the road station is still unknown) and via Aguntum to Veldidena or via Teurnia to Virunum and Iuvavum (see also Roman road Virunum - Iuvavum ).

The name Via Iulia Augusta is not recorded in the ancient sources for this street.

In the Itinerarium Antonini it is taken over the Plöckenpass and Aguntum as a shortcut to Veldidena and the shortcut to date (1/06) to the route over the Eisack valley is seen. The distances between Iulium Carnicum ( Zuglio ) and Littamum ( Innichen ) only fit the route over the Kreuzbergsattel (Zuglio - ( Sutrio ) - Forni Avoltri - San Nicolò - Innichen) and this will be the shortcut to the route over the Plöckenpass. It is also assumed that the route Aquileia - Virunum via Iulium Carnicum - castrum Ursen - Teurnia and that the route through the Canal Valley to Villach was not cut through until the 2nd century. So it can be assumed that according to the Antonini Itinerarium for the entire route "from Aquileia to the Danube mp CCLXXII" = 402.5 km (too short), the correct CCCLXXII mp and the Reichsstraße over the Plöckenpass into the Drautal (Irschen / castrum Ursen ) led or via Teurnia, with the road junction to Immurium (Moosham), Iuvavum (Salzburg) in Seeboden - Santicum (Villach / Treffen ), with the later built junction into the Kanaltal - Feldkirchen , with the road junction to Immurium - St. Peter am Bichl and Karnburg , to Virunum. The distance Aquileia - Virunum is CLXXXVII mp or 125 Gallic leugen .

The road stations were in: Tricesimo (Tricensimum), Zuglio (Iulium Carnicum) with the junction " viam Belloio ", Weidenburg im Gailtal (Larice), Greifenburg / Radlach im Drautal (Bilachium), Baldersdorf (....? ... .) and Villach / Treffen (Santicum). The route Virunum - Lauriacum ( Enns an der Donau), with CLXXXV mp led over the Görtschitztal with the first road station in Wieting (Carinthia) . The later course of the road over Friesach and through the gorge to the north was then included in the more recent street directory, in the Tabula Peutingeriana , as was the new road to Immurium that branches off at Treibach (Matucaio) and runs over the Gurktal . The information for the Aquileia - Virunum route through the Canal Valley can also only be found in the Tabula Peutingeriana.
