Franz Anton Alexander von Braune (born March 17, 1766 in Zell am See , † September 24, 1853 in Salzburg ) was an Austrian botanist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " brown ".

Life

Braune comes from an old Hessian noble family. His father was a royal caretaker (district captain with the duties of a judge) in Zell am See. He attended high school in Salzburg and studied law and administration. At first he was an “accessist” in the Werfen care court. Later he was also the overseer of the Botanical Garden of the City of Salzburg. In 1801 he was secretary in the mines and salt works, later secretary of the court chamber. In 1806 Braune, whom the Austrian side repeatedly showed great distrust, was decommissioned. In 1809 he was secretary at the rural medical school under Bavarian administration. In 1815 he became a consultant for ecclesiastical and secular foundations, where he was denied a permanent position. His application for employment as a professor of natural history at the Salzburg grammar school was not approved by the Austrian administration. In 1815 he was elected a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

His actual achievements were and remained of a botanical-scientific nature. He became a member of the academies and societies of Munich, Göttingen, London and Moscow. In 1797 his three comprehensive and groundbreaking volumes, Salzburgische Flora, were published . Various plant species (especially alpine plants) are named after him today. His planned major work on European alpine flora remained unfinished.

Braune also appeared as an author of travel guides and as a man of letters.
