The horror series is a German horror - and horror - radio drama series branded Europe , published in the years 1981-1982. The books were written by H. G. Francis , which is why the series is also known under the title HG Francis' Scary Series . In 2019 the series was revived.
background
history
After several single releases from the horror genre were brought onto the market under the brand name "Europe" in the 1970s, further episodes were to be bundled and established within the horror series .
As the first episode of the new series, the radio play Frankenstein's Son was published in the Monster Laboratory in 1981 . It is a new version of Frankenstein's son , published in 1977 . The second episode, Dracula and Frankenstein, Die Blutfürsten, was also just a new version of the radio play Dracula meets Frankenstein from 1979. The new versions only received new titles as well as changed pieces of music and different covers. For the next episode, HG Francis wrote a modified version of the novel Dracula , which appeared as episode 3 under the title Dracula, King of the Vampires . The fourth episode, Castle of Horror, was just a new version of the radio play Das Gespenst vom Schlosshotel , published in 1976 . Episode 5 Attack of the horror ants was the first new story within the horror series and the content was based more on the modern horror film than on the classic horror story.
Episode 15 consisted exclusively of the pieces of music from the series composed by Carsten Bohn, which were included in longer versions. This episode was also the last to appear on LP and MC , from episode 16 the radio plays were only published on MC. With episode 18 the last episode of the series appeared in 1982. Nothing is known about the reasons that led to the termination.
In 1987 ten of the eighteen episodes appeared again with changed cover pictures and partly remixed pieces of music. The titles were partially shortened for this.
In 1999 the series appeared in a revised version under the motto "The return of the classics" also on CD . Due to a legal dispute between the composer of the soundtrack, Carsten Bohn, and the brand owner of Europa, the episodes for this edition were edited, whereby the original radio play music was replaced with new pieces and parts of scenes with music were either rewritten or cut out completely. Since the original episode 15 consisted of pure music, it was replaced in this edition by the radio play Nessie, the Monster of Loch Ness , which was originally released as a single radio play in 1977.
The CD edition of the horror series is recommended by Europe from 14 years. The radio play editions before 1999 had an age recommendation from Europe of 12 years.
Shell design
The cover pictures of the first three episodes come from the artist Van Vindt, whose real name is Olof Feindt.
New, more modern illustrations were used for the reissue of 1987.

The radio play series was characterized above all by a large number of prominent theater and film actors who acted as speakers here.

SONY made a mistake in the second box. The cover says that this box is about three spooky adventures with the cult couple Eireen Fox and Tom Fawley. These two can only be heard in the 1st horror box. The first adventure of the second horror box is about the reporter couple Maggie and Bob Brown, played by Eva Gelb and Gerd Martienzen .
Revival of the series
With the advertising slogan "The horror series is back", SONY started a series of new productions with the well-known title Horror Series under its sales brand Europe in 2019 . The new author is André Minninger , and Heikedine Körting is again directing. The episodes will be marketed in CD , LP (“vinyl”), download and streaming formats .
