action

Germany in 1518 : Genoveva "Veva" Leibert grows up as the well-protected daughter of the glass merchant Bartholomäus Leibert in Munich . She initially felt addressed by the free-spirited ideas of her childhood friend, the painter Ernst Rickinger. This masked hand out leaflets in the city and railed against the indulgences of the Catholic Church. This makes him a thorn in the side of the arch-conservative Catholic priest Johann von Perlach. On the hunt for the heretic , the man of God spreads fear and terror in Munich with the help of the knight von Gigging and his wife Walpurga, arbitrary torture and death sentences are the order of the day at the time of the inquisition .

Veva's father, an admirer of the polymath Leonardo da Vinci , wants to put a stop to Perlach and his reign of terror. However, he gets ahead of him by killing Bartholomäus and his son Barthel and having his house burned down and overwriting the property of the church. Walpurga's henchmen kidnap and desecrate Veva and witness the attack on her parents' house, in which the murderers wear heretic masks. From now on Veva only seeks revenge: the godless heretics should die. So that she can become a citizen and obtain the right to hunt heretics, she marries her friend Ernst Rickinger. What she does not know at first, however, is that he too is one of those who support Martin Luther and that he is the heretic of Munich sought by Perlach. Ironically, Walpurga's torturers, who once attacked her, are supposed to bring her the heads of the murderers of her father and brother.

After Ernst Rickinger's disguise as the heretic wanted by Perlach is exposed, Walpurga tries to win the trust of Veva. Walpurga is convinced of Rickinger's innocence, and behind all this is her husband - the Knight of Gigging, who actually died years ago of the plague. She herself wanted to be free from her husband and was actually on the side of Luther and his followers. Walpurga and Veva ride together to Augsburg to meet Fugger . He is supposed to help Veva judge the murderers of Barthel and her father. There Walpurga tries to have Veva murdered by her people, but Veva barely survives and is saved with the help of the Saracen women and the gypsy Sandor. After Veva learns that in truth Walpurga is the murdering Captain of Munich, who is in the armor of her dead husband and in cahoots with Johann von Perlach, Veva calls the travelers camped at the gates of the city to arms. Walpurga and the fleeing Perlach are killed. Gigging's Walpurga hits a Saracenin throwing knife in the lungs while Perlach is beaten to death by an angry mob. Veva collapses and is cared for again by the Saraceness and Sandor, so that she can travel to Venice with Rickinger.

reception

Rainer Tittelbach wrote: “In contrast to the Iny Lorentz films on ZDF, Die Pilgerin and Das goldene Ufer , the philosophical dimension remains underexposed. Even if the time horizon, the cultural and church history, is always captured alibi in the dialogue - the story is told less than a journey on the way into life, into the age of reason or into the light of insightful science. For a long time life is and will remain an Old Testament (survival) struggle. Only at the end does an inkling of a freer society emerge. The Inquisition has been defeated - and Bella Italia beckons. "

The Süddeutsche Zeitung headlined: “ The wandering whore is now called Ketzerbraut”, the basic structure of the story is the same. The most interesting character in the story is Walpurga von Gigging, portrayed by Elena Uhlig as a "terrifying bogeyman with a curly wig and a costume that is reminiscent of the cute outfits of the gummy bear gang".

In Germany, the film was watched by 2.62 million viewers when it was first broadcast, and the market share was 8.8 percent. The documentary reached 1.29 million viewers.
